Alphabet Game (remote-friendly)
A crowd-pleasing game that works in-person or on a zoom call. You ask, I deliver.
I have received many messages asking about games that work in remote settings. Much of improv includes physicality, so video chat loses the magic.
That said, today’s game can be done in-person, over zoom, or even over chat! I wouldn’t recommend the chat option - but hey, it’s possible.
I recently tried one of the AI note-takers for online meetings.
One feature I particularly like is that it shows a breakdown of the % of time each person talked.
Finally, we have quantitative data to call out those who dominate the conversation.
Everyone has varying levels of comfort speaking up at work.
Many improv games (such as this one) allow team members to take turns talking, thus splitting focus equally and allowing everyone to contribute.
Silly contribution, but still contribution 🤪
Goal
Think quickly, trust your gut and your first thought
Keep track of the alphabet while still listening to others
Express your ideas freely, enhancing overall group comfort and creativity
How to Play
In the Alphabet Game, players create a conversation where each sentence must start with the next consecutive letter of the alphabet. For example:
Player A: “Always a pleasure to work with you!”
Player B: “Better make this project fun, then!”
Player A: “Can’t wait to design this new roller coaster!”
Player B: “Don’t you think we come up with a name first?”
and so on…
Key to success: Don’t focus too much on it being realistic. Follow the logic and rationalize your thoughts.
PS - You can start at any letter, and you just restart once you get to Z. You can always ask someone their middle initial and use that as the starting point.
Appropriate for✅ Friends & Family ✅ Colleagues ✅ Strangers | 🕰️ Time to play5 minutes (including explanation), but it can go on as long as you want. You could run an entire meeting like this. | 👨👩👦 Group size2+ people |
Great for work…
On video calls, this game thrives! You can easily play it in breakout rooms or as part of virtual team-building sessions. It’s great for quick thinking and fostering communication skills under pressure.
This will build trust with the team as they feel comfortable sharing their ideas.
